Congrats!

Kee Kim, site contributor, and his partner Fran Whitaker took first Place in the Northeast Regional Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition in NYC over the weekend. They also received the Best Brief in the Nation award.

Hits and Misses

January was a big month here at BiologyofLaw.com. With over 100,000 hits last month, we are starting to gain more notice and more visitors. In addition to the increase in hits, the site is undergoing significant changes. Check out the Chapter 10 of the story and look for other additions towards the end of the month.

Scrivener Reviews A New Kind of Science

Alan B. Scrivener, author of the monthly e-Zine Cybernetics in the New Millenium (C3M), shares his insight and experience on why he thinks Wolfram is right in the second part of his review of A New Kind of Science. In reviewing Wolfram's "magnum opus" Scrivener outlines an excellent curriculum for understanding why Wolfram should be accepted and how Systems Theory benefits from the "the vast darkness of [Wolfram's] subject".

Cats, Kings, and Congress
The Biological Basis of Law hosted an enlightening symposium at Franklin Pierce Law Center last Friday with special guest speaker Steve Fukuda. Steve shared his insights into the Biological Basis and how entitlements and rights intertwine. Discussion ranged from Disney to cat farms and everyting in between. Should you be suing someone because of fear?
A recent article on MSN's Slate looks at the more questionable side of phobias and torts. Dahlia Lithwick (author of this featured news item from September) asks some probing questions about how far we go to recover damages. Is the tort system justified?

Gina Holland of the AP writes:

The court will consider whether it was unconstitutional for Congress to give writers and other creators a 20-year copyright extension. On the line are huge profits for companies, like The Walt Disney Co. and AOL Time Warner Inc., that benefit from copyrights.

Intel + Microsoft = Big Brother?

Ross Anderson of the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory explains how TCPA and Palladium could affect the future of the PC:

Why wars don't stop terrorism.

Dahlia Lithwick, of Slate, shares insights on the the legal issues of post 9/11 millitary action:
"This 'war on terror' wherein we track down rogue al-Qaida members, then hold and/or torture them, is not a conventional military operation that meets any technical or international definition of "war." And the oddest part of it all is that despite all this insistence that we are fighting a war, almost no one can come forward with a coherent theory of why. "

Stop Gambling by Outlawing Computer Games?

ZDNet reports: According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, "The police will be responsible for catching offenders, who will face fines of 5,000 to 75,000 euros and imprisonment of one to 12 months. The blanket ban was decided in February after the government admitted it was incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines."
